These new Beyerdynamic True Wireless ANC headphones are simply stunning

German headphone and microphone brand beyerdynamic has been around for decades and has built a reputation for superb professional audio equipment. Countless recording studios and broadcasters use the company’s headphones to produce radio programs, podcasts and music. However, so far, Beyerdynamic has not entered the true wireless earphone market.

That changes from today with the launch of beyerdynamic Free BYRD. These all-new TWS headphones combine beyerdynamic’s reputation for superior sound quality with a design reminiscent of a classic guitar plectrum. But, of course, that’s a dead giveaway and these headphones are aimed squarely at music lovers.

By combining audio expertise with state-of-the-art manufacturing, Beyerdynamic has given the new Free BYRD headphones the classic Beyerdynamic sound and a great look. The wireless Bluetooth headphones also feature ANC (active noise cancellation) and 11 hours of playtime on a single charge.

The Free BYRD uses powerful 10mm dynamic drivers in each earbud and supports aptX Adaptive and AAC Bluetooth audio codecs. Hybrid ANC uses feedback and feedback technology to filter out distracting and unwanted noise so the user can focus on the music and nothing else. Transparency mode can also be activated by pressing the control buttons on the headphones. Transparency mode allows some outside sound to blend in with the music and is useful when listening to a travel announcement or being aware of traffic hazards while jogging.

An important feature of Free BYRD headphones is their comfortable and secure fit. The earbuds come with a selection of five silicone earbuds in different sizes to ensure the best fit. There are also three sets of memory foam earbuds, which are especially handy during vigorous exercise and require an even more secure fit. The Free BYRD earphones are splash-proof with IPX4 certification, which protects them against sweat during extreme workouts or while running in the rain.

For those who use their earbuds to make and take phone calls, Beyerdynamic Free BYRD earbuds use Qualcomm Dual 2-mic cVc technology for the clearest speech intelligibility, even during calls in noisy environments. There are a total of four microphones, two on each earbud. There’s also built-in support for Google Fast Pair, so the headphones can be connected to Android devices in seconds. The Free BYRDs are also certified to work with Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri voice assistants.

When using the Free BYRD for gaming and watching movies, there’s a low-latency mode that ensures words and images stay perfectly in sync. A Light Guide system helps the user select the correct mode using a sequence of different colored LEDs. As with most earbuds, the Free BYRD has a full set of controls available through the touch panels on each earbud.

Free BYRD headphones can be used with beyerdynamic’s updated MIY app. The “MOSAYC – Attention to detail with Mimi sound customization” adjusts the sound of the headphones according to the user’s preferences. By passing a two-minute listening test, the sound and settings of the headphones can be personalized and adjusted to the user’s hearing profile. Other features available with the MIY app include a Sidetone feature that allows users to hear their voice during phone calls. An equalizer function allows audio content to be personalized with a range of equalization presets. The app also updates the headphones whenever beyerdynamic releases firmware updates over-the-air.

Along with extra-long battery life of up to 11 hours on a single charge, the Free BYRDs are stored in their compact charging case, which charges using a USB-C cable or with any which Qi wireless charger. If users are in a rush, a 10-minute quick charge will provide up to 70 minutes of playtime. The charging case for the headphones holds an additional 19 hours of playtime, providing a maximum of 30 hours of total use before the case needs recharging.

Verdict: The sound produced by beyerdynamic Free BYRD headphones is fantastic. It may have taken Beyerdynamic a while to develop a pair of true wireless headphones, but it was worth the wait. Free BYRD headphones knock the sound out of the park. There’s a full sound with bags of energy and plenty of volume to spare. Solid bass never overwhelms the music, but it’s plentiful and underpins the rest of the frequencies. The midrange is forward and wonderfully clear, while the high end is smooth and perfectly focused. Distortion levels are low, making even longer listening sessions with the beyerdynamic Free BYRD headphones enjoyable and relaxing. Add to that the excellent battery life, effective noise cancellation and comfortable fit, and you have a pair of headphones that will delight. Highly recommended.
