The latest JBL headphones come in a charging case with a touchscreen

JBL has planted a new pair of earphones in the wireless listening pond with an interesting point of difference, arriving inside what is billed as the world’s first smart charging case. The new JBL Tour PRO 2 headphones promise the kind of premium audio you’ve come to expect from the brand, but also feature a fast-charging case with a touchscreen to put extra features at your fingertips.

The JBL Tour Pro 2 headphones follow other cool ideas from the audio maker, such as solar-powered headphones that promised potentially unlimited playtime and its versatile set of Tune Flex headphones that allow for closed- or open-back listening. .

The 1.45-inch LED touchscreen built into the Tour PRO 2’s charging case is something we’ve never seen before, though. It allows users to control music, take calls, read text messages and receive social media notifications without having to take out their phone.

JBL’s Tour Pro 2 headphones will be priced at €249

Part of this feels a bit like a solution in search of a problem – will pulling the charging case out of your pocket to play along to your music be any easier than just pulling out your phone? It might be, depending on where and how you use it, and it’s the kind of thing that could come in handy in unexpected ways. It may mean that the phone stays in your backpack. Or maybe the UI will be so intuitive you can’t believe you got it any other way (it looks like the screen offers quick access to noise cancellation, for example).

On the audio side, the buds pack 10mm dynamic drivers and customizable adaptive noise cancellation. They connect to your device via Bluetooth 5.3 and use a six-microphone array for voice calls. They offer a total of 40 hours of listening time, 10 from the headphones themselves and another 30 from a fully charged carrying case.

Available from January 2023 in black and champagne colorways, the JBL Tour Pro 2 headphones will be priced at €249 ($250 USD).
