Samsung Android 12 Update: These devices have One UI 4.0

Android 12 is still a brand new version of the platform, but Samsung is rolling out the update for its Galaxy devices less than a month after Google’s own Pixel phones. More devices will be updated over the next few months and Samsung has confirmed a preliminary list of devices that will be updated.

This article will be continually updated with new devices as deployments begin.

What’s new in Android 12 on Samsung Galaxy devices?

Android 12 is one of the the biggest platform updates ever visually, but most of these design changes are completely exclusive to Google Pixel devices. However, Samsung made some changes to the device in One UI 4.0.

Like Pixels, Android 12 on Samsung devices forces all widgets to have rounded corners and also adopts a new design language for some of these widgets. Some of Samsung’s stock apps have also been updated with a new design language, and Android 12’s Dynamic Color feature works great. The feature can extract colors from your wallpaper and apply them to system accents and many applications.

There are also plenty of privacy improvements in Android 12, with new indicators that visibly indicate when the microphone or camera is in use, even if they are in the background. Users can choose to give apps only an approximate location instead of a precise location, and there’s a privacy dashboard in the settings to easily show which apps are using sensitive permissions.

Shortly after starting its rollout on the Galaxy S21, Samsung also confirmed an official timeline showing when to expect Android 12 updates on various other Galaxy smartphones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are next on the list, with Samsung planning a launch in December of this year. Notably, we’ve seen several beta updates for these devices since the program first opened, so Samsung is clearly getting closer to that launch.

The timeline, posted through the Samsung Members app, sees most of Samsung’s smartphones updated to Android 12 in January and February of next year, with previous generation flagships such as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy series. S10 updated during these months. An interesting quirk is that Samsung says the standard Galaxy S20 won’t be updated until February, where the rest of the series will arrive in January.
