Renkus-Heinz provides home stadium audio upgrade for Atlético football fans – rAVe [PUBS]
The Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium in Barranquilla, Colombia hosts 47,000 passionate football fans for each of Atlético Junior football team’s home games. Colloquially known as Metro Stadium, the facility opened in 1986 to host regional and international sporting events in Barranquilla, Colombia’s third largest city. The Metro Stadium remains to this day the largest venue in Colombia.
With the stadium’s popularity, management has spent many years of the venue’s life renting audio equipment for major events – a cumbersome process that costs the stadium both time and money. To remedy this, Metro Stadium management worked with Barranquilla-based AV systems integrator Schaller Tech and audio manufacturer Renkus-Heinz to upgrade the stadium’s sound system.
Greg Schaller, owner and systems engineer at Schaller Tech, worked closely with Metro Stadium to design and install a state-of-the-art sound system that met the venue’s requirements.
“The Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium has been working to update and renovate the stadium with the aim of hosting South American Cup events,” Schaller said. “To do this, a good, well-designed and installed sound system is a great necessity. As Renkus-Heinz’s South American distributor, we knew that if we presented the technology to the stadium team, they would be blown away by the sound quality and intelligibility.
In early 2020, the Schaller Tech team used Ease Acoustic Simulation software to model the stadium and begin the design process; however, the COVID-19 pandemic put the stadium’s audio upgrade on hold. Back on the project, Schaller and his team installed more than 80 Renkus-Heinz TX151, TX82 and TX62 weatherproof enclosures.
Renkus-Heinz’s T-Series speakers are a two-way speaker system using state-of-the-art technology and application-focused engineering to deliver excellent, realistic live sound. State-of-the-art speaker technology and unique innovations such as Complex Conic horns deliver natural-sounding music and intelligible speech. Versatile enclosure designs, combined with a wide range of mounting options and associated hardware, provide unlimited flexibility for portable and installed applications.
“We’re very passionate about sound and Renkus-Heinz delivers great sound quality and great coverage,” Schaller said. “The TX Series helps us achieve balanced sound for the entire stadium. Loudspeakers are installed in the upper and lower rings of the stadium, and we can provide consistent coverage to every seat – and they sound great!”
Schaller says Metro Stadium switched to passive, non-powered versions of the TX-series speakers to reduce weight, as some speakers go up to 20 meters. A set of four amplifier racks with high-powered Linea Research amplifiers are fixed to the roof of the stadium and connect via fiber and a Dante audio network.
“The stadium hosted its first match in September 2021, and the Renkus-Heinz sound system was the sound solution,” Schaller said. “A few of our team members were in attendance and we received great feedback from stadium management, spectators, event sponsors and other suppliers. Everyone was very happy with the his.
