The Thunder, who made their Prairie Football Conference debut in 2000, were 8-0 after beating the Calgary Colts 35-16 on Sunday at Leibel Field. Calgary finished at 1-7.

Regina finished in first place for the first time, taking first place on Oct. 17 with a 45-42 overtime win over host Edmonton Huskies. The victory also set the standard for victories for a single season for the Thunder.

Brayden Long rushed for two touchdowns and led the Thunder in rushing yards, with 84 in nine carries. Ryland Leichert added 70 yards on 10 carries.

Munir Majien scored Regina’s other touchdown, on a 23-yard pass from Zenon Orobko.

Carter Shewchuk started as a quarterback for the Thunder, completing 11 of 17 passes for 136 yards with one interception. Orobko was 7-for-13 for 69 yards in a game that had no impact on the Thunder’s standings.

Isaiah Woodley had a team-high 60 yards receiving four catches for Regina. Majien added five catches for 46 yards.

Eric Maximuik had field goals of 44, 32, 29 and 16 yards for Regina.

Jonah Eirich had an interception for the Thunder, who got a sack from Reece McCormick. Wyatt Anderson had two sacks for Calgary.

Shemar McBean (on a 66-yard pass from Justin Verloop) and Ike Okafor (on a one-yard run) scored Calgary touchdowns.

After a first-round playoff pass, the Thunder must return to action by hosting a semi-final on the first weekend in November.

Bouchages Balgonie

The Balgonie Greenall Griffins recorded another shutout Thursday, concluding their Regina Intercollegiate Football League regular season schedule with a 23-0 victory over the Martin-Luther Kings.

Greenall shut out the opposition in four of the five Stewart Conference games she played, edging out the opposition 187-8. The Griffins (6-0) won another game by forfeit.

The Sheldon Williams-Spartans are the only team to score against Greenall so far this season. The Griffins defeated the Spartans 29-8 on September 23 at Leibel Field.

The Stewart Conference semifinals (5A) are set for Thursday at Mosaic Stadium, where Greenall will face the fourth-seeded Johnson Wildcats (5:15 p.m.) and second-seeded Sheldon will face Martin-Luther (7:30 p.m.).

The semi-finals of the Schwann Conference (6A) will be played on Friday at Mosaic Stadium. Playing hours are 5:15 p.m. (Miller Marauders vs. Winston Knoll Wolverines) and 7:30 p.m. (LeBoldus Golden Suns vs. Campbell Tartans).

Juniors at the forefront

The Saskatchewan Junior Men’s and Women’s Championships will be held July 5-7 at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

Regina last hosted the event in 1989.

The reigning junior boys champion is Hunter Kutcher of the Royal Regina. Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake won the provincial junior girls title this summer.

Football first

The first National Football Canada’s Under-18 Women’s Tackling Championship has been awarded to Regina. The event will take place from July 24 to August 1.
