Registration is now open for the Newport Festivals Workshops Program, a free, virtual after-school music program created by the Newport Festivals Foundation, which produces the Newport Folk and Newport Jazz Festivals.

According to a press release from the Newport Festivals Foundation, the workshops will be taught by professional musicians and music industry professionals on songwriting, audio engineering, careers in the music industry. and podcasting.

All high school students on Aquidneck Island are encouraged to register. No prior musical experience is required. Places are limited and workshops begin March 7. To register, visit

Each workshop will take place at 5 p.m. via Zoom, twice a week for six weeks. Students are expected to attend each session and will be asked to complete a small amount of out-of-class assignments.

Through the lens of diversity, the Newport Festivals Foundation says BIPOC students or those living with more difficult economic means will be given priority. Hourly student stipends will be given to participants in honor of economic equity. These students will be privately appointed by school counselors or students can request hourly help.
