Letitia Dean wins British Soap Awards Outstanding Achievement and announces tragic news in speech

Letitia Dean revealed sad news at the end of her acceptance speech as she won the Outstanding Achievement award at this year’s British Soap Awards and dedicated it to her father.

EastEnders icon Letitia, who played the much-loved character Sharon for nearly 40 years, received a rousing welcome from her peers at London’s Hackney Empire and her name was called as the winner of the coveted . After her EastEnders co-stars Lacey Turner and Gillian Wright were among the other winners of the British Soap Awards on the evening, Letitia received her award from her former on-screen mother, Anita Dobson.

Letitia was embroiled in huge storylines during her time on EastEnders, most famously ‘Sharongate’, when she cheated on her husband Grant Mitchell with his brother Phil.

Accepting her award, Letitia paid tribute to the cast and crew she had worked with on the BBC soap opera before sharing some tragic personal news at the end of her speech. She said: ‘I lost my dad a week ago so this is for my dad, hope he’s proud’ as the audience cheered.

Letitia added, “And for my darling mum and I hope you enjoy your fish and chips,” before finishing, “But seriously, thanks guys, I’m not very good at this public speaking, but I love you all and thank you so much for the way you love me.”
