CHESTERFIELD, Va., Oct. 12 (Reuters) – At a recent rally in Virginia, Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin spoke about his plans to boost the economy and fight crime, and said nothing at all about bogus claims that Democratic President Joe Biden’s election victory was the result of fraud.

But some in the crowd still heard the message, moments before the speech by the former private equity executive, when Republican State Senator Amanda Chase told Youngkin supporters – behind the scenes and without a microphone – that she was on her guard against a repeat of electoral cheating.

“I know what Democrats are trying to do,” she said in an interview after remarks that drew cheers. “If things happen again like last year, they will be caught,” said Chase, one of Virginia’s leading voices in support of former President Donald Trump’s baseless allegations of voter fraud, which the had called last year to declare martial law after his loss. in Biden.

The dynamics exemplified Youngkin’s thin line walking the country trail. He tries to avoid pushing back staunch supporters of Trump, a Republican, whose claims that the election was stolen from him have been dismissed by dozens of courts, state election officials and members of his own. administration.

But Youngkin also doesn’t want to alienate independent voters who disapprove of Trump and his role in triggering the deadly Jan.6 attack on the U.S. Capitol aimed at reversing his electoral defeat.

The Nov. 2 contest between Youngkin and his Democratic opponent, former Governor Terry McAuliffe, is widely seen as an indicator of the 2022 congressional races that will determine which party controls Congress during Biden’s second half of his term.

“Youngkin has the difficult job that falls on many mainstream Republicans,” said Jessica Taylor, analyst for the Cook Political Report, who sees the Youngkin-McAuliffe race as a failure. “You have to thread the needle really tight here because you can’t irritate the Trump base which you need too.”

Trump backed Youngkin and warned the vote could be rigged against the Republican.

Youngkin, however, called Biden’s victory “certifiable fair.” He made more nuanced statements about the integrity of the elections, saying this month that Virginia’s voting machines need to be audited, which is already being done.

At his rally on Friday, which was held under a covered merry-go-round in Chesterfield, south of the state capital, Richmond, Youngkin told the crowd: “We need election observers. Please volunteer. to be election observers. “

He also told the rally that he was grateful that Chase spoke there. “Thank you for being our partner,” he said, gesturing to her in the crowd. Chase, who lost to Youngkin in the Republican primary, has participated in several of his campaign events.

Asked about the disconnect between Youngkin and Chase’s comments on voter fraud, Youngkin spokesman Macaulay Porter cited McAuliffe’s connections to Democrats involved in past election disputes, including the former vice-president. President Al Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election to Republican George W. Bush after the Supreme Court halted recounts and Stacey Abrams, who challenged his 2018 loss in the Georgia governorship race.

‘PLOT THEORIES’

McAuliffe’s campaign picked up on Youngkin’s comments about electoral machine audits, running a TV commercial last week comparing Youngkin’s position to what a voice in the spot described as “conspiracy theories.” of Trump, juxtaposed with footage of the January 6 riot.

Virginia has become a Democrat in the past decade, in part thanks to population growth in its liberal Washington suburb.

Biden defeated Trump in Virginia by 10 percentage points, the fourth consecutive election in which a Democratic presidential candidate won the Southern State. Republicans won Virginia in every presidential election from 1968 to 2004.

Many Youngkin supporters at his rally said they were aware of Youngkin’s balance regarding the loss of Trump in 2020.

“He probably can’t come out and say it was robbed like I can,” said Tim Ashlin, 63, a retired utility systems operator from Cumberland, Virginia. “He must be more centrist.”

Some experts fear that Youngkin’s messages – and his campaign’s use of Chase – could undermine people’s confidence in the U.S. election.

“He’s clearly trying to have his cake and eat it too,” said Sylvia Albert, director of voting and elections at Common Cause, a voting rights watchdog.

CarPlay has always been a temporary way for Apple to integrate its software into existing cars while they work on something much more innovative. Everyone knows Apple builds its own car. When we see the “Project Titan” rumor, no one knows. In the meantime, Apple appears to be expanding its efforts to incorporate more aspects of existing cars from other manufacturers. Bloomberg reported Apple’s plans to connect CarPlay to things like air conditioning, batteries, seats, etc. Here’s what CarPlay could look like with further car integration.

It starts with a brand new home screen. The current CarPlay home screen introduced in iOS 14 has a more widget-like layout that lets you see your current location, media controls, and more. A simple swipe takes you to large app icons. But what if this screen was more dynamic and much more powerful?

First of all, Apple should authorize a fourth “widget”. The first two may be smaller and offer controls for car functions. In the example below, you can see a complication and a toggle to change the internal temperature of the car. Next to it, the car’s battery percentage and remaining mileage appear as Apple Watch fitness rings.

Under both of the car’s controls, you can see your current location on the new Apple maps. It can display relevant information like nearby charging stations, your proximity to frequent location, etc. To the right of the map we have the weather conditions. It also displays the next few hours, which can be very useful if you are driving a long distance. The weather can also notify you of unsafe or safe driving conditions.

This new home screen is smart and dynamic, so it can smartly switch and move widgets depending on what you’re doing. For example, if you are playing a podcast or music, a media player widget will appear and move the current location by one to the right. It has larger controls for forward, rewind, and play / pause.

You may have noticed that at the bottom left there is an App Library icon instead of a home button. Since this is now the home screen, there is no reason to have a home button here. Tap the app library icon to display the large app grid.

There are now also buttons for editing the arrangement and for sorting applications. Sorting apps can give you a similar layout to the app library on iPadOS 15, organizing your apps by category. At the bottom left, the Application Library button has changed to the dashboard icon. Tapping on it will take you back to the new home screen.

Since this concept is mostly about how CarPlay can fit neatly into car functions, I wanted to go beyond buttons and widgets. What if Siri could do simple things like adjust your seat, change the temperature, turn on the lights, and more?

You can just tell Siri to “pull the driver’s seat back a bit” or say things like “get me closer to the steering wheel.” This could be useful for cars that have hard to reach or oddly placed controls for the seats. Drivers would not need to handle them.

Another car control that CarPlay could integrate better with is volume. This is needed for everything from calls and podcasts to audiobooks and music. When it is important, CarPlay would contextually display a large volume slider. In the example we have here, you can see a redesigned call screen with bigger buttons, a new more prominent microphone indicator, and the contact’s Memoji.

But below all the expected controls you can see the large volume slider. You can press either side to change the volume or swipe on it just like you would on your iPhone. You may also notice that the button on the bottom left has changed to a dashboard icon, allowing you to go home.

Since CarPlay can present information about your car charging, it can also notify you of low battery. It might show a large full screen notification with the existing battery and how many miles you have left.

CarPlay can offer the driver two large buttons. One to find a charger in Maps and start immediate route navigation or to call emergency services for help if you are in a bind.

In addition to more in-depth car controls, CarPlay could benefit from more in-depth HomeKit controls. A new Home app in CarPlay could give drivers easy access to opening and closing their smart garage doors. On the far right, Apple could show your three most used scenes.

A driver could be on the way and activate a scene from his car. When they get home, all their lights are on and their place is ready for them.

CarPlay could also use some visual adjustments. I always thought wallpapers were useless for CarPlay and frankly a bit of a nuisance. I would remove them entirely and offer the user only a few themes – a light mode, a dark mode, and a new beige mode. Beige mode would work well in the interior of cars with a light brown interior.

I also changed all the text to SF Rounded to make the text smoother and more comfortable on rounded screens.

Light mode versus beige mode

Extract from the November / December 2021 issue of Acoustic guitar | By Hiroya Tsukamoto

While teaching fingerstyle guitar workshops, I have noticed that many players own loopers, or looping pedals, electronic devices capable of recording and layering music to create instant soundscapes, but few have fully explored their exciting sonic possibilities.

When used correctly, a looper can transform the sound of your acoustic guitar into something new and beautiful, while also making your performance more dynamic. It’s also a great tool for learning and understanding the structure of music and orchestration, as you can hear different layers at the same time.

In this lesson, I’m going to share some tips I’ve learned using loop pedals as a guitarist-songwriter, both in terms of gear and concept, focusing on three key topics: timing, contrast and arrangement.

How? ‘Or’ What Choose your Looper and your configuration

There is a wide variety of loopers on the market, relatively simple pedals like the BOSS RC-1 Loop Station and Looper TC Electronic Same as X4 larger and more sophisticated ones that have many different functions, such as the HeadRush Looperboard and BOSS RC-300. If you want to start exploring looping, I suggest you try something basic first, so that you can familiarize yourself with how the pedal works while playing the guitar. Also, as an acoustic player, I recommend using a looper with quiet controls – you don’t want the audience to hear the click of a metal pushbutton switch, for example.

You can send the sound of your guitar through a microphone (piezo or magnetic soundhole) or a microphone entering the input of the looper. In general, using a mic will give you clear sound that layers well. On the flip side, while a mic can deliver warmer acoustic sound, the extra information it captures can make your layers muddy. When looping, I prefer a combination of a mic and a magnetic mic, which provides both warmth and clarity.

How? ‘Or’ What Work on your timing with a looper

Timing is the key when it comes to buckling. You might have a lot of cool phrases and sentences that will work well together, but if you place them incorrectly, you’ll just have a big mess. Think of the first layer as the foundation of a building, on top of which subsequent layers are carefully placed for a structure with integrity.

It is best to think of a loop pedal as an instrument, the control of which takes a little practice. You can’t just turn it on and off like you would with a delay or chorus pedal. I have noticed that when recording or layering a loop, many students tend to press the start button a little too early, while some press it a little too late. A loop should start right off the beat, which is why I recommend that you practice timing well. Record a single loop and listen carefully to make sure it is rhythmically correct.

Note that some loop pedals have quantize functions, allowing you to adjust the timing of a layer relative to the beat. While this is certainly a useful function, ideally you want to have a good, solid rhythm inside of you, whether it’s playing guitar or creating a loop.

How? ‘Or’ What Create a contrast with a looper

By combining different sounds, such as long to short, bass to treble, your layers will be more discernible and more interesting together. To illustrate this concept, Example 1 shows the introduction to my original composition “Gemini Bridge,”Comprising five layers, each with a different approach or texture.

When I composed this piece, I first wrote this bass line, because I wanted to start with a memorable part. Then I figured out how many layers I would add and what kind of content I would like to hear in each. Using techniques such as palm muting in the outer parts and strumming tremolo in the third layer kept the layers distinct.

Another thing to consider: when using a looper, it is especially important not to over-play the guitar. The more space you use in one layer, the less space you will have in other parts, and things can quickly get cloudy. In other words, making effective use of silence is the key to good looping.

Think compositionally

Looping is fun and it can be tempting to continue to layer sounds and jam. This is great, but if you want the best results you have to think musically and compositionally, with an understanding of how your song wants to be heard.

As with everything in music, it’s important not to overdo a loop pedal, as this can make your music too predictable. For this reason, I don’t recommend using a looper in every section of a song – again, it’s all about the contrast. If you’ve written a song that you’d like to play using a loop pedal, I recommend that you think about the big picture: take note of the song structure and choose a section where the looper would be most appropriate. .

For example, in “Gemini Bridge” I try to maintain a good balance between the sections with and without the loop pedal. While the intro and B sections are built from layered loops, the A section and interlude are played without the looper. You can grab the attention of listeners by switching between sound layers and quiet solo acoustic parts.

Hope this lesson inspires you to pick up a looper and explore these concepts on your own.

Hytera is pleased to announce the launch of its TETRA E-Pack 100 Digital Wireless Ad Hoc Networking Device.

The E-Pack is an all-in-one radio, repeater and mesh node designed for fast and flexible deployments such as emergency situations. All three modes use only one frequency, which can save RF resources considerably.

No infrastructure or cables are required, making it ideal for situations requiring a quick response. The battery operated device ensures that when the power supply fails or TETRA networks are compromised, the E-Pack allows emergency services to communicate using their existing TETRA handsets in direct mode with up to 10 hours of talk time.

The E-pack can make and receive calls with other E-Packs or TETRA radios via a pocket microphone. It can be used as a repeater to transmit a call to another device, to a Hytera E-Center portable dispatch unit, or to connect to a macro network. As soon as it is powered on, the E-Pack automatically connects with other E-packs to form a dynamic, self-configuring ad hoc wireless mesh network.

Up to three jumps are supported. If an E-Pack goes out of coverage or goes down, voice calls are automatically routed to another E-Pack to ensure link continuity and provide a self-healing network. The E-Pack offers adjustable RF power outputs of 1W / 5W / 10W.

The lightweight (3.6kg) E-Pack offers flexible deployment options including backpack, wall, vehicle, and drone installation. It is very rugged, IP67 protected against dust and moisture and MIL-STD 810G certified for resistance to drops, shock and vibration. It operates at temperatures from -30 ° C to + 60 ° C.

A typical scenario would be a fire in a high-rise building, where coverage is not available due to the fire or lack of infrastructure. Firefighter E-Packs will seamlessly nest together using ad hoc links as they move around the building. E-Packs also support radio links with external colleagues.
E-Packs are ideal for search and rescue operations in mountainous terrain, as the 10W output provides extensive coverage. They can extend coverage above ground by providing temporary signal extension and provide reliable communications to field workers, such as electricity or other utilities, working in remote locations.

The TETRA E-pack 100 is an excellent addition to any TETRA public safety system, as it ensures that even in the event of a total communications failure, all staff can talk to each other using their existing terminals.

Portable wireless speakers can be a great audio companion for people on the go. One example is the Realme Cobble Bluetooth speaker. This is a small wireless speaker with water resistant construction for worry-free use even by the pool, beaches or cafeteria with food and drink spread across the table – basically the places where you would hesitate to use any of your electronic devices. In addition, the speaker has a built-in microphone. So you can use it to extend the audio setup of any bluetooth enabled device for loud and clear voice calls. Priced at Rs 1,799, the Realme Cobble Bluetooth speaker is more than it looks.

Starting with the design, the Realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker has a small pebble-shaped body no larger than the size of an average palm. The small speaker form factor and lightweight (200g) construction make portability easy. The top of the speaker is covered in a fabric mesh with a single dynamic audio driver and a passive bass radiator hidden underneath. The edges and bottom of the speaker have a plastic construction with a rubber finish. These allow it to sit firmly even on uneven surfaces. There is no need to place the speaker on an object, you can even hang it up using a cord supplied as a standard accessory with the speaker and its charging cable. Speaking of charging, the speaker has a USB-C port with a waterproof cover covered for protection against water ingress. The speaker is rated IPX5 for water resistance – it’s not rugged but good enough to handle minor water splashes.

When it comes to performance, the speaker’s 5W dynamic audio driver has a fuller audio output – thanks to its passive bass radiator, which amplifies low frequencies. There aren’t any fancy features here like Sony’s Live feature which expands the acoustics for a live concert experience. Even audio codes are limited to SBC and AAC. However, for a budget portable speaker, the audio performance of the Realme Cobble Bluetooth speaker is quite good. The usefulness of the speaker is complemented by its built-in microphone, making it a good external audio device for voice calls and video conferencing. The microphone is sensitive and picks up voice even from a distance. However, it is not better suited for use in an environment with high ambient noise.

The performance is complemented by the time on battery. On a single charge, the speaker will work for approximately seven hours when used for calls and music. While the time on battery was ok, the charging time could have been better – it takes around two hours for the battery to fully charge from scratch.

Verdict

The Realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker is a budget portable and sonic wireless speaker. Its lightweight, portable form factor is accentuated by rugged build quality. Despite the lack of some fancy features, the speaker audio impresses with a more comprehensive output – ample volume, crisp highs, fine vocals, and deep bass. Overall, the Realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker is a great fit as a portable wireless audio speaker.

The imminent threat of ecological collapse is quite inescapable. That it reveals itself spontaneously deadly floods in New York or a catastrophic oil spill off the California coast, utter devastation seems almost imminent. While the urgency of this crisis is indisputable, Mike Mills go! Go on maintains that there is always merit in maintaining optimism. While continuing to model his protagonists on members of his immediate family – in this case, his nine-year-old son (and that of his colleague Miranda July) – the director presents an image of sincere sentimentality rooted not in states of nostalgia or nostalgia. of lived experience previously occupied. , but rather a forward-looking hope for an ostensibly busy future.

A year after their mother’s death, radio journalist Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) reaches out to his sister Viv (Gaby Hoffmann) to remedy a recent miscommunication. While catching up, Viv reveals that her ex-husband Paul (Scoot McNairy) is in the middle of a bipolar episode in the Bay Area, and she feels compelled to go and convince him to seek hospital care. Johnny has only one question: who is going to watch his son Jesse (Woody Norman) while he is away? Although originally tasked with watching over his nephew for just a few days, extenuating circumstances led Jesse to accompany Johnny on a massive city-wide reporting project. Fittingly, the mission finds Johnny and his colleagues conducting audio interviews with children across the country, assessing their thoughts on matters of heart, mind, and soul – in particular, what are they thinking – they what the future will look like? Although he undertakes an intimate story about the often overlooked interiority and intelligence of American teenagers, Johnny finds himself utterly unsure of his ability to take on the role of guardian of his own parent.

A little like Beginners is directly inspired by the coming out of his father and 20th century women through the experiences of his mother and sister, go! Go on Also brings Mill’s own memories to the screen. This time, the cinematic catalyst was a simple bathtime conversation the director had with his son – a detail faithfully recreated in the film with a delicate, realistic touch. However, it’s hard to imagine the film’s success without the dynamic chemistry between Phoenix and Norman, the two perfectly playing out each other’s dialogue and an air of childish spontaneity permeating every interaction. Norman’s performance is a rarity in that it demonstrates obvious talent while preserving a childish playfulness that never seems overplayed. Hoffmann’s low-key performance is just as effective for the same reason, imbuing the role with a semblance of utterly modern millennial motherhood, endearing in its eccentricity. Even the ancillary elements of the film help imbue a more palpable sense of truth, like the casting of real-life WNYC Radiolab correspondent Molly Webster as one of Johnny’s colleagues or the beautiful banality of the movie. recording of street sound, tone of the room and narration for a radio station. room.

While it is true that a multitude of films have already explored the clash between children and impromptu guardians when assimilating to their new roles (John Cassavetes’ Gloria, notably, as well as Lynne Ramsey’s 2017 film starring Phoenix You ain’t never really been there), go! Go on differs from its predecessors in maintaining the innate innocence of the children involved. There never comes a time when Jesse or any of the young subjects in the interview are completely exposed to the meanness of the world, but that’s not due to their own naivety. The film is as much about how the rearing of children forever changes an adult’s mundane outlook as it is about the unpretentious thoughtfulness of young people. Even when confronted with questions about an increasingly uncertain global landscape and complex inner thoughts, it is explicitly clear that children experience “real world” anxieties that adults are particularly quick to dismiss, though. ‘they probably feel the same way themselves.

In the technical sense, go! Go on is also extremely effective in using the sonic intricacies of audio journalism. Johnny introduces rudimentary concepts such as microphone gain, audio levels, and speaking distance to Jesse, who grabs it with childish ease and intuition, and whose frenzied audio recordings end up on Johnny’s tape alongside Johnny. ‘formal interviews – a taped reminder of Johnny’s tangible investment in the well-being of the next generation. The score by twin brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National (for whom Mills has shot music videos before) is also stunning in its minimal range, never eclipsing the soundscape of bustling city noise and quiet residential blocks captured in each city visited by the team.

Although the central radio play that Johnny and his colleagues gradually build up over the course of the film is at first depressing in its assertion of awareness of how well young people are aware of the perils of the world that await them as adults, it is also heartbreaking and hopeful in her honesty. Almost none of the interviewees perceive the future as completely devoid of opportunities for improvement – and if at least some kids really believe that things can change for their generation, wouldn’t dismissing that tender optimism be exactly the same brand of condescension that many kids express their frustration with? Especially when the presence of material problems in the lives of many of these children is more relevant – incarcerated parents, emotional neglect, racism – the end of humanity seems to be the least of their problems.

In this sense, the next generation needs more than intangible wishes and condescending pity. Instead, they need strong interpersonal support, deeper emotional understanding, and advocacy from the adults in their lives – overall, to be taken much more seriously than they do. currently are. By amplifying the diverse voices of American children through the film’s Radio Truth subplot, go! Go on proves kids have some pretty insightful advice to give, if only we would listen.

Ken Singleton is retiring from the New York Yankees stand after more than two decades on the job.

The New York Yankees broadcast booth simply won’t be the same after Sunday’s regular season finale. After 24 years, Ken Singleton will call it a career and retire behind the microphone.

Singleton announced his retirement when broadcasting Saturday’s game on the YES Network alongside longtime partner Michael Kay. Not surprisingly, he was universally celebrated almost immediately.

Ken Singleton was a household name long before he became a broadcaster. He played 15 seasons, primarily for the Baltimore Orioles, and won a World Series with them in 1983. The dynamic hitter retired with a lifetime batting average of 0.282 and 246 homers.

We’re all going to miss the calls. “To look for!” on a pitch up and in. Or on a home run, “This one’s GONE! A home run!

But all good things come to an end, and Ken Singleton has cemented his place in baseball history on both sides of the mic. Happy retirement, Ken. You deserve it!
