Buffalo Rose and Tom Paxton Announce Collaborative EP “Rabbit”

Pittsburgh-based collective Buffalo Rose, chosen as the official band for the SXSW 2022 showcase, has announced their upcoming EP Rabbit, which will be released on February 22.

The band teamed up with GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award winner and folk legend Tom Paxton to write and record all four tracks on the EP. Today they release the first single “Runaway”, a song with all the energy and anxiety of new love, the fear and excitement of the unknown, and the electric thrust of hope and of hesitation.

Rabbit follows Paxton’s 2019 release live! (with The DonJuans) and the 2020 release of Buffalo Rose Borrowed & Blue: Live Around One Microphone. The EP, a perfect release for the last breath of winter, combines Paxton’s honed songwriting skills with Buffalo Rose’s instrumental prowess. It’s how sweet, wild and precious the gift is when it’s all you have.

The world is strange and dangerous for a rabbit, but even so, a rabbit knows how to enjoy – in green grass, a safe burrow or the warmth of another body. Rabbit themes are derived from the hope of doing everything we can to find what we are looking for. In this EP, these seven musicians explore the answers to many questions and have some serious fun in the process.

Buffalo Rose is an extremely charismatic six-piece folk/Americana band from Pittsburgh that will completely change your perspective on acoustic music. They take the tradition of singer-songwriters to a new level by creating original songs that are emotive, meticulously arranged, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in.

In 2018 the band released their debut album, The Soil and the Seed and established themselves as a vocal, instrumental and creative force. Since then, Buffalo Rose has released two EPs, Big Stampede in 2019 and Borrowed and Blue in 2020, opened for the Wood Brothers, Mipso, Pokey LaFarge, Tyler Childers, Infamous Stringdusters, and shared a festival stage with the legendary Sam Bush. The band’s upward trajectory will continue in 2022 with the release of Rabbit, followed by a full new album later that year.

Buffalo Rose’s line-up of Lucy Clabby (vocals), Margot Jezerc (vocals), Bryce Rabideau (mandolin), Malcolm Inglis (dobro), Jason Rafalak (double bass) and Shane McLaughlin (guitar, vocals) push themselves far beyond their perceived limitations and mixes their diverse and atypical approach to songwriting with a desire to see how unique a song can become and still feel right at home. They use powerful vocal harmonies, strong playing and original vision to operate on every possible emotional level and deliver dynamic live shows that are unforgettable experiences. They go from high to low to sad and soft and back again, pulling the whole audience along.

This combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important bands working today. Rather than playing the folk music of the past, the group gleefully combines genres and ideas to take acoustic music to a new, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive, Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers will find a lot to love in this crew. Anyone looking for compelling new acoustic music should join Buffalo Rose in the future now.
